Matthew - Walking Along With Jesus Part 1

The Science Of Temptation

"Your eternal destiny was a sandwich away." Esau sold his future for some stew. Eve gave her life for a piece of fruit. With Jesus hungry, weak and alone, the devil probably thought he was one lip-smack away from his goal: the total destruction of the human race. As you may have guessed, we're in Matthew, chapter 4 today - the Wilderness Temptation. Some of us have heard this story since childhood, but Pastor Jim will help us think about it more deeply. Here's Part 1 of The Science of Temptation.

Jesus Goes Public

When Jesus launched His ministry, one of the first things He did was bring in some fishermen! The Lord didn't initially recruit theologians, or skilled speakers, or even natural leaders. He began his talent search on the lake. Or rather, on the Sea of Galilee. He wanted some men who lived for a bountiful catch. Today we'll be in Matthew, chapter 4, for the first half of the sermon Jesus Goes Public.

Character Of Kingdom Citizens

If God were to come down and chat with us, we'd expect Him to tell us that we're thinking about some things the wrong way. Well, God did come and talk to us in the person of His Son, and Jesus did try to set us straight about some very basic things. In His famous Sermon on the Mount, He turns a lot of our human values upside-down - or I should say, rightside-up. For example, Who is blessed; it's not necessarily the rich-and- famous. If we listen to Him, we'll get the view from heaven, and eternity. We're in Matthew, chapter 5 today, with Pastor Jim.

Righteousness: Conduct And Character

Jesus didn't come to lower the bar; He came to lift us over it. As crooked beings we have a hard time imagining what it means to be plumb and level. We are "out of true," to borrow an expression from the tradesmen, and no bent person is able to straighten himself out. So when Jesus started teaching His disciples formally, in public, He started at the beginning. What is righteousness? What does it look like? Here's Jim to open a new message from the Sermon on the Mount. We're in Matthew, chapter 5.

Building A Life Worthy

"Judge not, that you be not judged." It's the favorite saying of Christ among those who don't want to come under the rulership of Christ: "Judge not." But of course it can't mean that we shouldn't call sin, "sin." A few sentences later Jesus tells his followers, "Don't cast your pearls before swine" - requiring us to discern the holy from the unholy, and the worthy from the unworthy. We're continuing our quick survey of the Sermon on the Mount, in Matthew's Gospel. Jim's new sermon is called Building a Life Worthy.
