Called To The Good Life - Part 2

Some people read the Sermon on the Mount as if Jesus was giving out a new set of Rules. He wasn't! First of all, there's nothing wrong with the old Rules. But that's not the purpose of the Beatitudes and what follows. We needed to have our aspirations recalibrated! We needed to see the situation as God sees it. The only way we'll live a life of significance is to find out what's really significant. We're in Matthew 5 as Pastor Jim begins a new sermon: Called to the Good Life, Part 2.

Being Good For Nothing

Salt. It's a life-sustaining nutrient, it makes things taste good...and it raises some people's blood pressure. Jesus uses metaphors not just to explain the Kingdom, but to explain us to ourselves. We disciples, He said, are the "salt of the earth." In that time and place, salt was as vital as water - and, as many have pointed out, it was used as a preservative. But even in our hypertensive times the comparison still works; our saltiness will cause an adverse reaction in some. Jim's new sermon is called Being Good for Nothing. He's in Matthew, chapter 5.

Promises Made To Be Kept

The Pharisees and other religionists offer a system. Jesus brings a gift. People today are just like the people of the first century: we can't believe that God is serious about His standards. He must be grading on a curve, He must be exaggerating for effect - or else no one could measure up. And that doesn't make sense. The Pharisees thought their rules had raised the bar of holiness, but Jesus said they had actually lowered it. Let's join Jim in Matthew 5 for Part 1 of the sermon, Promises Made to be Kept.

Principles, Applications and The Prophets

Jesus wasn't spouting greeting-card platitudes with the Sermon on the Mount. Today we'll hit two troublesome verses. The challenges the Lord laid down for His followers are so daunting, some say they're impossible in the present world. What will we say? Here's Pastor Jim with Part 1 of Principles, Applications and the Prophets

Values Worthy Of Death

Jesus wasn't "lowering the bar," but He wasn't raising the bar, either. Before our "Christmas break" we were studying the Sermon on the Mount, and we noticed how emphatically the Lord spoke about the Law and its precision, and its permanence. As we move forward in Matthew 5 we'll see Him expound and expand on the Law, but we mustn't get the idea that He's making the "narrow way" even narrower. Some serious discussion on tap today, as you can tell by Pastor Jim's title, Values Worthy of Death.
