Matthew - Walking Along With Jesus Part 2

I Will Build My Church

"Red sky at morning, sailors take warning...." The Sadducees and the Pharisees weren't mariners, or meteorologists; they were religionists. Their expertise was supposed to be in the Word of God. But they could read the signs of nature far better than they could recognize the supernatural signs that should have been plain to them...as experts. Matthew 16 is full of contrasts like that. We'll look into those today and tomorrow, in a sermon called, I Will Build My Church. Here's Pastor Jim to open with prayer.

Jesus Predicts Messiah's Future

We can understand how the Disciples would think that, once they had linked up with Messiah, it would be champagne and roses from here on out. Jesus had a shocking surprise for His elite dozen: The path to glory goes through the grave - for Him, and for them, as well. They would all have to "man up" for the dark days ahead, and Christ had a short time to prepare them. As we leaf through the Gospel of Matthew we want to linger a while in Chapter 16. Today we launch a new sermon by Jim called, Jesus Predicts Messiah's Future.

God Defines Greatness

Muhammad Ali famously said, "I am the greatest." But Jesus said that the humblest is the greatest. We're still not very good at this, are we - at appraising a person's "greatness" by his or her level of humility? We tend to think of a "great" person as the one who is accomplished or talented or influential, not in the terms that Christ laid out in Matthew 18. Here with a reminder, and some explanations, is Pastor Jim.

Only One Who Is Good

The Pharisees tried to stump Jesus with a question about divorce - but they weren't prepared for His answer! The Disciples, too, were caught off guard with the Lord's response. In a few sentences Christ set all of us straight about the divine design of marriage, the real root of the divorce problem, and the inspiration of the Scriptures. We've been "Walking Along with Jesus," and today we turn to a new chapter in our Matthew series.

Surprised By Grace

I'll make you a deal: For you - today only - All Commandments Half Off! If 10 whole commands are too many, how about 5 - would you keep 5? If your soul depended on it? No? Well, how about just one? Jesus planted a new thought in the mind of the Rich Young Ruler: What if the self-made road to heaven is a dead end? Here's Jim to open the sermon, Surprised by Grace.
