There are two lost sons in the story we call the "Prodigal Son." Obviously, the younger brother was selfish, rebellious and foolish - but the older brother, too, was self-centered, not father-centered. He was pathologically unable to empathize with the hurts and joys of others. In the figure of the older brother, Jesus was holding up a mirror to the Pharisees, to the Jews, and to religionists of all times and places.
