Mark: Gospel Of Action

Good Mothering

"You're not all that and a bag of chips!" After enjoying some success in His ministry, Jesus returned home. And the reception in Nazareth was chilly. The general mood was, "Who does this guy think he is?" We know almost nothing about the Lord's boyhood years, but there's a clue here in Mark 6: When His neighbors saw Him grown up, they were not prepared to believe who He had become!

Jesus' Final Exam

"When did you stop beating your wife?" Loaded questions are fun - when you're not on the receiving end of one, say in a courtroom or during a debate. The questioner has tried to conceal his false assumptions. He's sure he's caught you in his ingenious trap; he's already smirking as the question leaves his lips. The Sadducees thought they were going to humiliate Christ. But they would come to regret it pretty quickly. Here's Pastor Jim to open a sermon called, Jesus' Final Exam.

Mirror On The Wall, Who's Fairest Of All?

When Muhammad Ali said, "I am the greatest!" he probably wasn't claiming to be the servant of all. The road to greatness in boxing, or in business, isn't the same as the path to prominence in the Kingdom. On the other hand, they do have similarities. Discipline, for one. And we can't achieve either kind of greatness without aspiring to it. Our Mark: Gospel of Action series continues with an overheard conversation. Jim will begin reading in Mark 9, verse 33.

A Faith-Full Father

Are we ready to dive back into the Gospel of Mark? The song counts "12 Days of Christmas," but our culture has expanded that to about 2 months. And we hope you had an excellent celebration yesterday. But... coming back down from the mountain, so to speak, our ordinary lives and challenges await us. So it was for the Disciples after the Mount-of-Transfiguration experience. We'll hear from Jim in Mark, chapter 9, after an associate pastor reads the scripture text.

Be Alert!

Jesus made one prophecy that was almost too easy! You don't exactly have to be sync'd up to God's day planner to predict that human monuments will fall. The atheist Percy Bysshe Shelley wrote a classic short poem about that. And to forecast the destruction of the Temple? Well, when Christ came on the scene, the Temple had been razed and rebuilt already. But Jesus got more specific. Jim will shine a light on the general and the particular prophecies about the End, as we continue in the Gospel of Mark.
