If you "always let your conscience be your guide," you're forgetting someone! Paul pens a radical idea in Romans 14: Since there will be differences of opinion in the church, for the sake of unity I should be constrained by someone else's conscience! With the "pros" and the "cons" both bending over backwards to accommodate each other, there won't be any disputes about doubtful matters. Well, we obviously haven't listened to that wisdom.
